History of Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park
The Eastport Historical Committee started the Museum in 1990, and its scope was expanded to include all of Annapolis in 2000. The McNasby Oyster Company, the area’s lone functioning oyster packing facility, is located on the Museum’s property. Hurricane Isabel wreaked havoc on the McNasby building in 2003. The Museum reopened the completely renovated McNasby’s building in December 2008, providing a waterfront educational facility, an exhibition gallery, and an assembly hall for schools, history and heritage programmes, talks, concerts, and community and business meetings to the Annapolis area.
A Brief History of Maritime Annapolis
When the first English settlers arrived in Annapolis in 1649, they discovered a pristine Chesapeake Bay as well as a Native American population that had been thriving off the Bay’s bounty for centuries.
The early Europeans harvested oysters, caught fish and crabs, and produced their own crops to feed their growing families from their small, hand-built boats. Tobacco was also grown for trade. Growing “sot-weed” was how the wealthiest Annapolitans made their money in the early days.
